Faye Cahill’s Little Bits of Wonder

January 5, 2010

Recently I have been lucky enough to be granted a short interview with Faye Cahill of Faye Cahill Cake Design. For those of you who may not heard or seen Faye’s work, pick up any wedding magazine in any newsagency in australia & you are bound to stumble across her decadently gorgeous cake.

Faye lovingly design and decorate delicious custom wedding cakes with a very stylish designer edge. The first thing that drew to me to faye’s cakes are the fine, clean lines – I’ve seen enough cakes in my life time to know that she must’ve put an amazing effort to make each one her cake magazine-worthy.

How long have you been in business and how did it start?

Faye Cahill Cake design has been operating for three years, and before that I had 14 years experience making wedding cakes, firstly at Sweet art and then co-founding Planet cake. I fell into cake decorating after working in cake shops while studying for my art degree.

What inspires your creations?

Inspiration can come from anywhere- combinations of shapes and colours in the natural world, architecture, interiors, fashion or something that is very personal to the couple.

My brides always bring in beautiful elements from their wedding scheme, from stunning stationery, lace and embellishments for inspirations. As we are known for our beautiful sugar flowers, we often look at new trends in floral design and are inspired by natural flowers and botanical elements.

When should couples start their wedding Cake search?

Most clients come to see me around 6 months before the date, and that timing is recommended outside of winter months. For dates in cooler months, less notice is usually fine.

It’s always good to have some of the main elements in place before designing the cake and having a consultation, but often clients will email before then to get approximate prices and discuss designs.

Any advice on selecting a wedding cake supplier?

  • Brainstorming
Bring in as much material from your wedding as you can- invite, fabric and lace swatches, favours, and mood images including wedding dress sketch or photo, floral arrangements, room decorations and images of the venue to provide a starting point for cake designs.
  • Viewing
Look for a decorator you can trust to create an original design for you, and make an appointment for a Saturday when you can often see real finished wedding cakes ready for delivery.
  • Tasting
Make sure you can taste the flavours and check whether the cakes are layered with a filling and masked with ganache before icing. Cakes prepared this way take longer but will not dry out after icing, and are generally the icing will be much thinner producing a better taste.
  • Customizing
Ask about size and proportion, including the height of each tier. Generally the more height you can achieve with the cake, the greater the visual impact will be. And you can also ask whether the company makes their own sugar flowers, or uses the cheaper imported ones.

So why Faye Cahill Cakes?

We are a small specialised studio and we prefer to complete a small number of cakes each week to a high standard, so we can give each cake the attention it deserves. We can also provide a finished sketch of your cake as a memento to keep after the wedding.
